I am a nature freak – I admit it! There is nothing that makes me feel as good as quickly as being outdoors somewhere beautiful. The feature article below explores how you and I can mindfully use nature to help us on our life’s adventures. As I was writing, I realized I have never had someone tell me that they hate nature – although some of us are more interested in the great outdoors than others are. Let your preferences rule your choices, but if nature matters to you – take some action.
Get yourself outside to observe and be awed. Do something to help our environment – today’s buzz is to “Go Green” or you can just pick up some litter along your road. I observation is that our gains in technology are pulling us away from nature a bit and I know that this trend can be reversed. Do your part to connect with nature and I know you will feel the reward.
PS – As always, I love to hear your comments on Life Adventure Notes. Send me a line to let me know how nature helps you or comments about this month’s issue.
|Did You Get Your Dose of Nature?
When I was trying to decide what to write about this month, I decided to use one of my old standbys for inspiration and go out into nature. That’s when it hit me – nature is a huge resource for each of us! It’s a little about awe and a little about pace. Let me explain.
Young children all know what many of us have forgotten. All you have to do to see something interesting or even amazing is to go outside and look at nature. Picture a child fascinated by the way a worm wiggles, imagine the laugh you’ll hear if a child catches a frog or the delight on a young face to see fish in a pond. The natural world is filled with amazing and even mysterious wonders.
My love and understanding of nature is thanks to my grandmother who lived with us when I was a child. One of my earliest memories is putting bits of string and yarn in the backyard in the spring for birds to use in their nests. I still remember seeing a robin pick up one of those bits and fly away! Nanny knew the importance of being attuned to nature.
The natural world moves at a definate pace. The days and the seasons all pass with regularity and the earth’s creatures move in synch. The beat of the ocean surf, the movement of the stars through the sky, the growth and bloom of the flowers all speak to the rhythym of nature. Only man has made his own tempo.
There have been hard times in my life when I used the ocean as my healing ground. Something about the sounds, sights and smells reminds me deep inside that things will turn out the way they should. It isn’t even a conscious process, but it works. Now that I don’t live near the coast any more, I have discovered that mountains, woods, lakes and even the plains can have the same effect for me.
Inspiration comes when I allow myself to get on the earth’s pace – usually this means slowing down. Like for many of us, flying around and getting things done is not always conducive to my creativity. Nature is all about creation. It is always a nice reminder to me how nature is so valuable to all of us to inspire creation of all kinds.
It doesn’t matter where you live, you can still get a healing or inspirational dose of nature. City dwellers have tiny slivers of the natural world in their lives – parks, flower boxes, city birds and just the sky above. Each can serve the purpose of connecting us with that power that is our earth.
Please go out today and find a bit of nature. Focus on the wonders of whatever you find. Breathe slowly and let the pace of the world settle in for a few minutes. I guarantee you will find a little bit of peace or healing just like my robin found her little piece of yarn all those years ago.
