Be bold. When you embark for strange places, don’t leave any of yourself safely on shore. Have the nerve to go into unexplored territory. ~ Alan Alda
Let me tell you the bottom line right away here:
both success and happiness
come only from taking risks.
A life without risk can be comfortable and familiar. But no matter how wonderful it feels to be safe in this way, staying comfortable and familiar is also a trap…
Here is the tradeoff that life requires of us…
You can be always safe or you can experience your full measure of joy.
You can’t have both.
you sacrifice your ability to achieve hard won results,
you have very limited choices,
and you have a diminished capacity for aliveness…
It’s a huge price to pay to get the same old, same old that goes with comfortable and familiar.
Comfortable is overrated.
I want you to become comfortable with being uncomfortable!
I’m not talking about risks like jumping out of airplanes or wrestling alligators…
What I am talking about are calculated risks – thoughtful and studied – like knowing you must go back to school to learn what calls to your heart. Not impulsive risks for the sake of taking a risk.
Here’s how to do it.
- Take a deep breath and observe the situation from as neutral a place as you can. Look at both sides of the issue and at what factors are within your control and which are not. Study your decision in an objective manner by noting your emotions but not making your decision based upon them.
- Listen to that still, small voice that whispers to you in your most quiet moments. It’s your spirit and it knows what is best for you. Paying attention to your spirit in the form of instincts or intuition can propel you to take the right risks. Those that can bring a reward that is more than worth the risk.
When you decide to stretch your limits, you have both fear and the excitement of knowing that the action could open up whole new parts of your life. If you plan well before taking action, that big step out of the “box of comfortable and familiar” becomes a calculated risk.
Getting out of your comfort zone
while managing the risk
is the key to a successful and happy adventurous life.
I can’t talk about risk without mentioning courage and confidence. You already have all you need of both although you are not using them if you are living a life of complacency or fear.
The first step to finding them is an act of reaching inside. You will find courage when the possible reward is important to you. Courage happens in the moment when you rise to meet the challenge – whatever it is that you are facing. Just do your best.
The result of these acts of courage, however small, is that you become a more confident person over time.
Because you will have more access to hidden parts of yourself that will make you stronger.
You will feel a sense of renewal and be more open to happiness and the possibilities of life.
It’s a natural process that requires calculated risks – a life of action.
In the end, you will embrace challenges, instead of avoiding them, because they are a vital part of keeping you happy, whole and thriving.
I’ll admit, the whole idea of risk taking can be one of the hardest to begin. But you don’t have to do it alone. Enlist someone that cares about you to help you.
