If you let yourself be absorbed completely, if you surrender completely to the moments as they pass, you live more richly in those moments.
~Anne Morrow Lindbergh
It’s hard to recognize when your spirit is weary/damaged/missing. You might feel/notice …
your energy is gone
you are overwhelmed
you get irritated easily
you feel constant pressure
you don’t have a lot of hope
you are always lonely no matter who is around
If more than one of these signs is true for you, please look carefully to find ways to repair and tend to your spirit. In general there are a few ways that work for most people to heal your spirit.
1. Get outdoors.
Whether your favorite place is the beach, the lake or the mountains, get outside. Even the park in town can help you to reconnect with the natural world. Your spirit needs to feel a part of something bigger than you and nature is the fastest way to do that.
2. Slow down.
Whether you meditate, do yoga, practice mindfulness, or simply sit and relax, it is important to make time for simply being instead of always doing. Those things that feel urgent are usually not and can wait. You must move slowly to contemplate and be in touch with your spirit. Only then will you know whether you are centering your life around the things that truly matter to you.
3. Foster hope.
Hope allows you to connect with a part of yourself that knows the bigger picture, believes in growth and life and is empowered by the sense of purpose that results. It’s a state of mind that influences behavior and is influences by your thoughts and attitudes.
4. Grow faith.
Having faith implies trust in future outcomes. The key is to have a place to turn to outside of yourself for replenishment when your own faith is lagging. Increase your own hopefulness by giving voice to what you believe in. It is easy for doubts to creep into your thinking when you are silent. Stating your thinking for others to hear makes your faith more real and more true.
5. Notice the magic and mystery of the world.
Do you understand why the sky is blue and how a bird flies? Magic and mystery are the everyday reminder that there is a power much greater than even mankind that influences our daily lives. It is both reassuring and exciting to acknowledge that we don’t need to be on top of everything. It allows your spirit to rest.
6. Get into action.
Your spirit needs you to be in motion. Loneliness and hopelessness come from feeling stuck, from being rooted in one spot. Do some small step towards forward movement in your life and your spirit will respond.
Perhaps we should be talking more often about our spirit: want it wants and what it needs. The world would be a different place if we each did that.
I’m advocating for a kind of simplicity in a life of adventure. It’s as simple and as difficult as releasing control. The rewards are huge.
I learned a saying many years ago in 12 Step support groups, “God didn’t make no junk.” That means your spirit is a precious gift to the world. Tend it well.
I have been helping people for 25 years tend to their spirits. Sometimes I hold the hope for them. Sometimes I push them to action. Other times I simply pay attention and provide support while they do the steps of healing.
