There’s one approach to New Year’s celebrations that encourages you to select a theme word (or 3 theme words) for the coming year. The idea of having a theme is to keep you focused and balanced.
I’ve selected themes for quite a few years now – this year my theme is just one word.
It’s time for me to do some hard adjustments. Soul searching. Shedding of the old and actively creating of the new.
Choice as a theme is a one word reminder that all those things require hard choices.
A reminder that all that you do matters.
A reminder that what you do – what you think and even what you feel – is indeed under your control.
And it all depends on the choices you make – both big and small.
When you look back at those times when you chose to give something your best shot, you can see that you were totally in control and using the best of yourself.
It’s a powerful choice to go there – to the place where you have jumped into the moment completely. And it is the only way to truly know that you have used your strengths and you have achieved something.
You made a choice in that situation to rise to the moment.
Whether you are the musician who gets lost in the music…
or an engineer who is solving a tough problem…
or a coach who is dancing in the moment with a client.
The choice of full participation requires us to be the best of who we are and so it touches our soul.
There are also times when the choice is a big one.
They are usually in response to a big challenge that life has brought you without your wishes or consent.
You may have faced a serious challenge in your life as I did when I was diagnosed with cancer. This type of major event requires a choice between buckling to the circumstance or pulling deep within yourself to carry on.
Your choices here will impact how you look at yourself and your life. You will be a different person before you walk out the other side of this type of big event.
And the choices you make when you are challenged can make all the difference.
I was a different person by the time I heard the word “cured” from my cancer. Now many years later, I know that I am also a better person because of it.
There’s the secret of the choices you make.
It doesn’t matter if the choice is life changing or one of the hundred of little choices you make every day.
It is not easy to decide not to eat those sweets or to say no to your child for the ninety-ninth time, but it can be the foundation of having the life that you want.
Think about the thousands of tiny choices you make as you go through every day.
– The choice of how to handle your anger when you are stuck in a traffic jam.
– The choice to get your house cleaned when all you want is to put your feet up.
– The choice to how you decide to handle a tough work assignment.
– And literally hundreds more every day…
Pay attention to each choice you make.
Your choices can open up a new world for you. They allows you to see people and things differently.
There is no greater power than to choose how you look at your world.
